March Blog Post #2

Hey guys,
As the topic for my senior retreat speaker is finalized, I am now ready to finally reveal the speaker.

Dishpaul S. Dhuga was born in Toronto, Canada after his parents emigrated from India. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Sciences from York University in Toronto, Canada. He received his Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School in New York State in 2004. At Albany Law, Dishpaul concentrated on civil rights, human rights, domestic violence (DV), and women’s rights. During his second year at Albany Law, he was awarded an International Human Rights Scholarship for the summer, and interned at the South Asian Human Rights Organization in New Delhi, India. After graduating from Albany Law, Dishpaul worked at the Empire Justice Center representing immigrant victims of violence for over eight years. He also conducted trainings on immigration and DV, human trafficking, and immigration protections for LGBT victims. Dishpaul started working for the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) in 2012. At OPDV, he was responsible for developing curriculum and training health care professionals on the importance of recognizing intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual assault, and how violence affects health. He also conducted trainings on the intersections of HIV & IPV, sexual & reproductive coercion, and IPV in maternal & child health care. Currently, Dishpaul is the Director of Title IX & EEO Compliance at the Sage Colleges, (both Troy and Albany campuses), where he is responsible for making sure the college complies with Federal and State sexual assault, discrimination and harassment laws by: conducting investigations involving sexual assault, discrimination, and harassment; and training students and staff on Title IX, NYS’s Enough is Enough law, consent, bystander intervention, escalation, reporting procedures, and campus policies and procedures related to sexual assault, discrimination and harassment.

I am truly grateful that a great speaker who is highly knowledgeable about themes related to my signature project is available to lecture at the retreat. I have been in contact with both my mentor and Mr. Dishpaul about finalizing the details of the speaker series, and have made great progress.
